Rocky River Course

Course Overview

Designed by Dan Maples, nationally known for creating some of the Carolina’s top courses, Rocky River Golf Club is the premier public course in the Charlotte metropolitan area and is owned by the City of Concord.  Managed by the Embassy Suites, Concord it is one of the only courses in the state of North Carolina to offer stay and play packages with a fantastic hotel affiliate.

Bent Grass greens and 419 Tiftway Bermuda fairways make Rocky River a very challenging golf course that appeals to all skill levels of golfer from beginners to scratch. There are four sets of tees allowing play to encompass a full range of opportunities for all who delight in the game. The expected pace of play is 4 hours 30 minutes, with starting times scheduled on 10 minute intervals.

Rocky River is a very challenging golf course that utilizes many of the existing features of the area to provide a natural and very aesthetically appealing track. The routing flows through the existing contours of the land effortlessly, thus creating a continuous succession of sensational holes. Beautiful rock outcroppings and various species of native wetland grasses are featured along the edges of gently rolling fairways adding a touch of ruggedness and mystique.

Large contoured greens make accurate iron play a necessity, for a ball played to the side of the green, opposite the hole, will result in higher scores. Playing the course from tee to green at a 4 1/2 hour pace of play is not overly demanding, but again, ball placement is a must. Errant drives and iron shots that find their way into any of our natural areas, such as wetlands and seeded fescue will be lost forever. There are four sets of tees allowing play to encompass a full range of opportunities for all who delight in the game. Rocky River appeals to all skill levels of golfer from beginners to scratch.

The expected pace of play clocks in right at 4 hours 30 minutes, with starting times scheduled on 10 minute intervals. Below you will find the U.S.G.A. Course and Slope Ratings, the yardage for each hole based on various tee boxes, the pace of play per hole, the handicap, and of course….Par!

Course Designer

Dan F. Maples was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1947. At the age of six, Dan designed his first golf course and was handling earth moving equipment before he had his driver’s license. During summer vacations, Dan worked for his father gaining valuable experience in golf course construction and maintenance.

After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia in 1972, he worked as a club pro for two years. In 1974 Dan joined the firm of his father, Ellis, as a full partner. Together, the team of Ellis and Dan Maples helped create 17 superb courses including Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC and the Country Club of North Carolina Dogwood Course in Pinehurst.

Since forming Dan Maples Design, Inc. in 1984, Dan has gone on to become one of the most successful signature golf course designers in America. His impressive list of courses includes many of America’s finest. Dan has brought this wealth of experience to Rocky River Golf Club at Concord in creating what is destined to become the premier public course in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

For Dan, one of the rewards of being a course designer is the ability to leave behind something for future generations to enjoy, a fact he takes seriously. “That’s something people work a lifetime to do. For me, it provides an obligation to do a good job.”
